Skip by Stoner and TW by Wessells

In my mind the best surf photographer by far was Ron Stoner, purely because few had come before to influence his art, there was John Severson, Ron Church, Leroy Grannis and Doc Ball all legends. Stoner had the edge I think, small moments of style held still in 500th of a second. I would imagine Stoner has an influence on most modern day snappers such as JJ Wessels. Here is a young man, great surfer and great photographer who also knows how to frame the moments in a modern era of surfing. The two images capture two great surfers. Skip Fry the legend in one of the most iconic shots ever recorded (below) and Tyler Warren the modern day stylist shot by JJ Wessels (top). This is why I blog, I might have mentioned that before when I talk about Kyle lightners shots, cos he's cool too!!

Trawling through some old shots and still not been in the water too much with the housing due to time and my own surfing getting in the way. Surfer first, snapper second. Its great looking at all the amazing shots coming through the blogs these days and am committed this year to do more, I've got so much to learn. Its hard sometimes to give up my own surfing time to concentrate on shooting but when having a four year old means that windows of opportunity are so valuable and precious.

Its great here in Sennen at the moment, we have a few really good groms coming up and their all developing into really good surfers. Dave Muir is takng a whole bunch of groms to Morrocco soon, including young Oran Lynch. Oran mixes it up with all sorts of boards and is turning heads already. Sennen Surf School have an amazing little programme going with the younger surfers here and there all feeding of each other.

It seems to be that my moments of opportunity to take a few shots have lately coincided with the dark and often dismal weather of our Summer. The last week in September has been exceptional for swell and great weather and that has been perfectly timed with work, although a couple of great surfs have taken priority over shooting . Therefore I have to learn to get used to shooting in the sub standard conditions or start to sacrifice more surfing. Decisions!!! This is James Parry dancing in the dark.

I've known Freddy Warwick for over ten years. He was a Chunky Brother then and he's a Chunky Brother now. Spending 22 years as a Royal Marine, he is now retired form the forces and in between teaching surfing for his local surf school and as a Director of Surf Action can be seen styling up at Gwithian and Godrevy. Freddy is now representing the Brotherhood of Chunk and one could not find a more perfect example of team requirements!!

My daily blog search always begins with seeing what beauties Kyle Lightner has developed. Coming across shots like this is like flipping through the pages of a surf mag, finding the one shot that makes the magazine worth buying in the first place, and then, because of that one photo, keeping that magazine safe for ever. How do come to this opinion, because my wife asks me why I have to keep hold of all my old surf magazines? Simple; I don't keep hold of all of them, I keep hold of the special ones, the ones with shots like this; Shots that make me want to go surfing, shots that make me want to take great photos and shots that you can tell your friends about. Prior to going surfing, local free surfer John Buchorski would always flick through a magazine to find the one shot to inspire; he then held that page open and visualised the moment, embed that frame in his mind and then go out and shred. My family, Larry and Oran Lynch travelled up to Crackington Haven yesterday for the 2011 Eurpean Fish Fry. There were some great boards to be seen and many people had bought their own special vehicles they have in their own quivers, from Pavel, Kookbox, Skip Frye and even Al Knosts 15th board he shaped which Mr John Eldridge had purchased on a recent trip. However, the highlight for me was Mr Natty, seen here getting a trim and a piece of beard action. Mr Natty was a the barber to the lords, and high profile types. Matt travels the world with his pop up barbers shop and cuts hair and is just one of those classic guys you meet every now and then. Could not resist getting my own hair done. Look out for Mr Natty at next years Surf Fayre. Great fun day and great to catch up with friends like Sally from Original Surfboard Company and Alex Rowse who showed had his Ryan Lovelace Hull there. I've not had the pleasure of seeing a true hull up close like this and never realised how extreme they can be, a thing of beauty. Great Day.

I'd not seen John Eldridge for a good couple of years really. He's been away travelling and surfing. John is a surf I always like to see, he's smooth and creative and was riding some great looking boards. John was an invitee at the Hip Wigglers and one of the great things about the comp was the seeing what people are riding. The guys at Empire are making some great looking boards and with Nick Radford and Alex Rowse riding them, they have an amazing bunch of hip wigglers putting them through their paces. Always a pleasure to see these chaps surf.

Classic event with some amazing surfing in pretty testing conditions. Although the Cornish weather was unrelenting in the drizzle department the day went off without a hitch. y far the best comp witnessed and taken part in. So much fun. The final included Elliot Dudley riding a 9'8" Bing Elevator, Sam Bleakley on a 9'6" McTavish Noosa 66, Jimbo Bennet on a 9'8" Yater Spoon and Matt Travis on a 9'6" Slide 65. The winner was Elliot who styled is way to victory in a final that was so hard to define who was the better surfer. Everyone was letting loose and getting loose in the juice. I was on the beach shooting for the final and the expression session and I'm glad I was not judging. The Hip Wigglers was a great success and I can't wait for next year. James Parry has done wonders with this one. More shots to come but this is Elliot on an inside section on his way to victory.

After a great day at Sennen today it really showed how Surf Action Lottery funds are being used. We had a blast in the perfect little waves at Sennen, the waves were perfect for learning and we had some special guests from RAF Boston and RAF St Mawgan and these were welcomed by our usual suspects from our weekly clinics. Great food, great fun and great people, thanks everyone. Photos to come shortly.

Due to James Parry being so bloody good, he went and got invited to California to compete in the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational at Malibu on the 10th and 11th of September. This means that we all have to re-arrange our diaries, move things around and accommodate James, again!! That boy thinks of no one but himself sometimes and always puts his own surfing and grand achievements before any arrangements we may have made, so selfish, we're always having to see him jet off for some photo shoot or winter in Oz, wishing him luck and all that. I'll be glad when he is past this phase of being so bloody good, stylish, inspiring and super smooth and things settle down and gets himself a real job. One day he might stand up to the likes of Joel Tudor and says 'I'm sorry Joel,legend that you are, I'd love to come to your amazing competition and surf with the best in the world, see my mates, which lets face it Joel would be alright, a comp that all my UK mates would love to come to, but honestly Joel, I can't let them down so I'll be staying in the UK and running the Hip Wigglers on the same weekend as the Duct Tape because my mates are depending on me and on the Sunday I might even try and win the World Belly Board Championship as well.'
Seriously, everyone is so stoked for you mate, even if you do look like a thunderbird in your new RASH wetsuit!! Get yourself to Cali and do your thing mate, with this new date in september on a great weekend for surfing the Hip Wigglers will be epic and the World Belly Boarding will be classic as usual.

Surf Action Surf Fayre ...Yeeewww

This Saturday Surf Action held our first major event. Staying close to our passion of Surfing we held a Surf Fayre at Sennen community hall. Local board companies like Slide 65, Otter, Seed, Glass Tiger, the Balsa Surfers, Traditional Surfing, paipo glide and the lovely Sally Parkin from Original Surfboards. Sally kindly presented us with two of her beautiful board for our veterans to use. I would like to thank everyone who came along and had a stand, such as Muju World and Jilpi. Each person made the event happen and kindly gave a donation to Surf Action. Thanks to all our volunteers who worked solidly throughout the day, raising money, selling refreshments and providing information. Surf Action thanks you all so very much The awareness that was created was fantastic and we shall be starting to plan next years. If there is anything I haven't said here to say how very grateful we are please let me know. As soon as we have a total amount raised we shall let you know. Thanks to Butch Hawkins and Jessica Cooper for providing two fantastic prizes. See you all next year... Yeeewwww!!!

Sitting at home on a rainy summers day watching the World Motocross championships, knowing my good friend Dan Beamish will be at home in Sussex doing the same. The Beamish family is legendary in UK motocross history with generations riding dirt bikes back to his grandad. A family of British Champions, schoolboy champions, and Dan's father Graham Beamish (pictured) who recently passed away introduced Suzuki Off road bikes to the UK. The family still runs the Golding Barn Racewaynear Brighton. happy memories of growing up watching the racing and still stoked when I get to watch it now.

Cyrus Sutton knows how to make great films. Riding waves was a classic, my favourite ever section of Joel Tudor riding a log. His latest Stoked and Broke is beautifully shot and has great messages running through the movie. He also happens to be a sick surfer on all manner of vehicle. Download the film here and you will not be disappointed. I Shot this in the Korduroy tent at Sacred Craft, San Diego last year.

Surf Rodeo Champ 2011

This weekend has been epic; sun, waves and plenty of fun had by all at the Ashely Moffet Memorial Rodeo 2011. each year friends in Sennen get together and have a surf comp that Ashely would approve of, its got to be fun. This year the format began with fancy dress team events. Teams included Surf Action, Royal Marines and Navy, British Army, and other random entries wearing anything you could find. After the team round we held an expression session with the best surfer in each team taking to the water to express their them self! Who won this, James Parry (team Surf Action) who won the overall individual title, James Parry, and who won the team event team Surf Action!! It helps to have a ringer and someone like Rich Emerson (former gymnast) who can do a perfect head stand from out back all the way in, me, I just make up the numbers. All proceeds went to Surf Action which was amazing and this will be used to continue our work by taking combat veterans surfing every week and help them move forward. Ashley you would have been proud, a great, great day.

Captain Skelly

On a brief visit from Devon, Captain Skelly turned up at our door this morning, wound up my son Jago to the point of no return, drank my coffee, had a chat and then left to walk to Cape Cornwall and back with his mate James. No doubt they will be surfing this afternoon whilst I continue to calm down Jago, still reeling from the aftermath of Captain Skelly. Saying this, its always a pleasure to see him and always welcome, and ladies; he's an eligable batchelor that has his own Captains hat, Red Ensign to fly from the van on special occassions,is a great surfer, has a massive collection of vintage boards, is a creative artist, a salvage expert (whatever washes up on Saunton beach is his), a quiver of antique consatinas, spear fisherman and has a great dog called Bear who keeps him on the straight and narrow. Oh and he loves beer. A great catch for anyone, for more details contact Gulf Stream Surfboards between Friday and Monday 10-5pm.
