Mikey and the Duct tape

Just been cruising the blogs  as usual and was looking at the Slide 65 site Mikey Lay is shortly off to Indo for some surf time with his sponsors Rythm and then off to the Land of the Long white Cloud to take part in the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational. Mikey one his place after winning the Hip Wigglers in Jersey last year and fully deserved it too and wish him all the luck. If he surfs like he normally does...look out and he'll be representing Rob Wright and Slide 65 Surfboards which is amazing for Rob too.

Hip Wigglers 2013

This years Hip Wigglers was epic. We just returned from Jersey, tired a little bruised, wind swept but laughing. An amazing crew of people that gets better every year. James Parry and Joe davies did and amazing job of organising this years event. Great bands and phenomenal surfing. The final was the best display of logging I have seen in some testing conditions. Mike Lay came out as the 2013 Champion and thoroughly deserved it for his creative and cat like surfing. His prize was...a wild card to the next Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational...Priceless. Well Done Mikey and all the crew for an epic weekend. Keep a look out for some more photos. This one is an instgram from the LCD on the 7d!!

Britannia rules the waves!!

Union Flag tail patch on my Slide 65 log. Rob kindly shaped two boards a while back for Surf Action and I couldn't resist a bit of patriotism!!

Mr Lay Hip Wiggle

Mikey has a cat like approach to surfing, said of others before but he is probably the most reactive logger amongst the UK Hip Wiggling crew. It often seems Mikey has the quickest reflexes to react to any certain situation thrown up by the wave. Riding a pintail slide 65 log he also has the smoothness in his turns. If I had an ounce of the reactions I'd be stoked. Studying in Liverpool at St John Moores in Liverpool you can see his writing skills in the latest issue of Kook.

KooK Issue 3.

I'm sure many of you avid surfers have partaken in a cup of fine tea, a hob nob and a read of the new Kook mag/paper. If you haven't, its a great read and availabe here. I am fortunate enough to have a piece in there called Visualised Drifter (excuse a couple of typos), but if you haven't seen it yet, my bit is available here on my website. By the way this shot (which I'm quietly stoked with) is John Eldridge, great surfer, creative lord, and contributor to the fine KOOK, doing what he does best, styling. I must also add that Kook is put together by Dan Crockett and Alex Rowse, two more creative lords.

Strrrrrretch fives and Hip Wiggles

This years Hip Wigglers was Stretch Five central. Everyone was at it and they look so good when done well. A little harder for us older Hip Wigglers or should that be Hip Replacements, I can get down there but getting back up needs a whole new yoga regime put in place, less cake and a whole lot more flexibility. This is Matt Travis styling.

teach me yours ways..

Rob Wright has been coaching James Parry in the ways of shaping and this board is the one James has taken to the Duct Tape Invitational in Biarritz this weekend. Here's hoping he got it right and brings back the goods. Go pazza.

Party Waves at the Wigglers

Oran Lynch is an amazing young surfer, he will get better and better and will one day be one of the very best. The good thing about Oran is he loves a party wave, especially at the Hip Wigglers, and on this occassion with an old duffer like me. These were two of ours in our heat; the first one I forgot he was there and after performing this immensely stylish drop knee turn and what the next fram would have showed is Oran nearly fricking spearing me with his log!!! The second, we shared a ride on my log but I held onto him so tightly (more for the balance of an old man) he couldn't get to the nose. This ride won us £50 beautiful pounds, who says dropping in does not pay!! Thanks to Gavin at Finshack for the shots.

My own site..yeeeww!

Whilst being on staycation at home in Sennen I have finally got round to putting a my own website together. Its not your singing and all that dancing kind of website but I think it looks pretty good and its a start. Please go over and take a look at a few of the galleries and work. I have included a selection of articles I have written over the years which has inspired me to write some more and work on some new projects. These ones were well received so why not have another crack. You can see the site here.
