Al kNost inspires.

A few years back i got a chance to shoot Alex Knost in Devon. A small crew inclusing Tyler Hatzikian, Devon Howard and Dane Peterson were soon to head off to Ireland to shoot some stuff for a project called September. Watching them all surf was inspiring, getting to meet them all was a little like being a grommet at 35 years old!! Alex Knost was, and still is one of my favourite surfers purely for his reactions to whatever the wave throws at him. I see part of this in some of our local lads like Mike Lay who has cat like reactions and young Oran Lynch who throws in some randomness when needed. These shots are about seven years old now and Alex was riding a lovely Dano log and I'm sure his journey has been amazing since then. I still go back to these shots, have a look and then automatically want to go and surf, problem is today is flat so its fixing dings instead!!!

Kyle Lightner & Alex Knost

My daily blog search always begins with seeing what beauties Kyle Lightner has developed. Coming across shots like this is like flipping through the pages of a surf mag, finding the one shot that makes the magazine worth buying in the first place, and then, because of that one photo, keeping that magazine safe for ever. How do come to this opinion, because my wife asks me why I have to keep hold of all my old surf magazines? Simple; I don't keep hold of all of them, I keep hold of the special ones, the ones with shots like this; Shots that make me want to go surfing, shots that make me want to take great photos and shots that you can tell your friends about. Prior to going surfing, local free surfer John Buchorski would always flick through a magazine to find the one shot to inspire; he then held that page open and visualised the moment, embed that frame in his mind and then go out and shred. For me, this is that photo. Taken by Mr Lightner of Mr Alex Knost. Thankyou.

Hip Wigglers latest

This will be so much fun. The poster designed by Nick Radford at Frootful includes a shot I took of Alex Knost a few years back, stoked. James Parry is working hard on this and we will all make sure its a great success.

Al Knost by Kyle Lightner

Love this shot by Kyle Lightner of ALex Knost in Byron Bay. There are so many videos of Alex Knost doing radical turns, eccentric but beautiful surfing and nose rides that defy balance. This shot captures grace and style in a moment of re-direction. I wish I could afford film.

Alex Knost by Dane Peterson

Had a little logging session on the South Coast here today and was super stoked to surf with Rob Wright from Slide 65 surfboards. Also stoked to have ordered my new log whilst over there. Can't wait for this new toy its going to be so different from all the logs I've been riding. Anyway to keep me stoked when I got home I found this, Another classic shot of Alex Knost by Dane Peterson. Style is everything and this shot is singing out loud.

Knosty by Novosel

Whilst my Mac is being fixed and upgraded I'm paying homage to some of my favourite and most inspiring photographers. If eventually I get my water housing or borrow my mate dave's, I would only hope I could capture an image as sick as this one. The surfer Alex Knost, the photographer Keith Novosel. Classic. Check the link 'Look what the light did now'

AK by Jack English

There are so many great photographers and surfers out there, and when the two meet great things happen. Many people may have already seen this shot of Alex Knost doing a serious bottom turn, but I had to put this on my blog. Great shot by Jack English.

Stretch Five '101'

Its not too bad getting there but getting back can be hell for an old bugger like me. Alex Knost putting his toes out there.

Alex Knost can't dance...

....to African drums, but he can surf. The vibe after watching 'The Present' seems to be infectious. Everyone here who went to the premier is talking about their favourite section, whether it be logging in NZ or screaming rights in Africa to ridiculous Alaia riding in the Hawaiian islands which was breathtaking. My favourite, the Michel Junod single fin action, smoooooth..

Cheater Five Hand Jive

We have our premier of Thomas Cambell's new film 'The Present' in two weeks at St Ives Cinema. This image got me all excited about seeing some more super styling hand jiving brothers and sisters on all manner of vehicles.

More Alex

Another little snippet of Alex Knost. My friend once asked him if he did dance at school. He didn't get it! When I explained that it was because he was so animated on his board he finally understood the comment.

One California Day 2

There's a section in One California Day that features Alex Knost talking about his influences and his style. When shooting photos of him in Devon he definately had a unique and eccentric style that was amazing to witness from a few feet away and not from the sofa. However, a new DVD, a cup of tea or two and a packet of biscuits goes a long way to improving your own surfing by just studying the masters over and over again. The joy of rewind!
